Quick answer: what is selling in Malaysian-owned skincare right now?

In our September 2026 review of Malaysian-owned skincare brands trading on TikTok Shop Malaysia, the lead products cluster in five formats: serums, sun care, moisturisers, creams and cleansers. Entry pricing is low — 38% of brands start under RM20 and the median entry price is RM40 — and only about one in five of these brands holds JAKIM halal certification. Volume is concentrated: the top five brands take roughly 55% of the sales value.

Key takeaways

  • Serums and sun care lead the format mix. Both demonstrate well on video and stay cheap to ship.
  • This is an entry-price market. Nearly four in ten brands open below RM20, which sets the unit-cost brief before anything else.
  • Simple formats win. The successful products are standard categories executed cleanly, not novel ones.
  • Most of these formats already exist as ready formulas, so the launch question is packaging and positioning, not new development.
  • Only about 1 in 5 of these brands is halal-certified — which is invisible online and decisive the moment they approach retail or export.

Which product formats are actually selling

Counting the lead product of each of the 46 Malaysian-owned brands in the set, five formats dominate. Against each one is the practical read for a brand owner planning a launch.

FormatShare of lead productsWhat it means for a launch
SerumHighestSmall fill, high perceived value, easy to demo on video. Also the most crowded — the active story has to be specific
Sun care / SPFJoint secondDaily-use repeat purchase, but SPF testing is non-negotiable and any formula change means re-testing
MoisturiserJoint secondThe steadiest repeat-purchase format; texture in a humid climate decides retention
Cream (treatment)Joint secondCarries a higher price point when the claim is specific rather than general
Cleanser / gelFifthLowest margin per unit, but the entry product that pulls the rest of a routine

The price architecture behind those formats

Entry price — the lowest advertised price in a brand’s range — clusters low. This is what dictates fill size, packaging choice and whether an active is affordable at all.

Entry price bandShare of brandsTypical implication
Under RM2038%Stock packaging, efficient fills, actives chosen for cost-in-use
RM20 – RM4925%The mainstream band; room for one differentiating active
RM50 – RM9922%Requires a specific claim or a clinical-feeling format to hold
RM100 and above15%Needs evidence, packaging quality and a reason beyond marketing

Median entry price across the set is RM40. A brand planning a RM19.90 hero and a brand planning a RM120 hero are running two different manufacturing briefs, and the decision belongs at concept stage.

What a brand can put into market quickly

Because the winning formats are standard ones, most of them already exist as proven, production-ready formulations. That is the difference between a six-month development cycle and a launch measured in weeks.

Ready-formula launches start from 50 units per SKU under an R2B launch package, which is how most first-time brands test a format before committing to custom development.

The gap nobody sees until they leave TikTok

One number in the data has nothing to do with formats: only about one in five of these brands holds JAKIM halal certification, and certified brands sell at effectively the same price as uncertified ones (median RM37.75 versus RM38.50). Online, certification earns no premium.

It starts mattering at the first modern-trade listing meeting, the first cooperative tender and the first Indonesian distributor conversation. Certification attaches to the manufacturing line, not to the brand — so a product made on an uncertified line has to change factory to qualify, which means new stability testing and a notification update. Our halal OEM manufacturing page sets out what a certified line has to demonstrate.

The ORIZI perspective

Based on ORIZI Group’s manufacturing experience, the briefs that succeed in this market are narrower than the ones that fail. A first-time brand asking for a serum with six actives, custom packaging and a RM25 shelf price is describing three incompatible things; the same brand launching a single well-executed format at the right price usually gets a second product.

The second pattern: brands pick the format from what they like, not from what the channel rewards. Sun care and moisturisers repeat; serums acquire. A launch plan usually wants one of each rather than two of the same.

Limitations

  • The snapshot covers TikTok Shop only — not Shopee, Lazada, pharmacy retail or direct sales — so it is not a measure of total brand size.
  • Format counts are based on each brand’s lead product, not its full range.
  • Platform sales figures come from a third-party analytics source and are estimates, not audited sales.
  • Rankings on TikTok Shop move quickly. Treat any capture older than three months as indicative only.

Frequently asked questions

Which skincare product should a new Malaysian brand launch first?

On this data, a serum or a moisturiser. Serums attract attention and demonstrate well on video; moisturisers and sun care carry the repeat purchase. Cleansers are the cheapest entry but the thinnest margin.

How low can the retail price go and still work?

Brands do trade below RM20, but at that level packaging must be stock, fills efficient and actives chosen for cost-in-use. Below about RM15 the arithmetic usually stops working for a locally manufactured product with meaningful actives.

What minimum order quantity does a TikTok-first launch need?

It depends on format and packaging rather than the channel. Ready-formula launches can start from 50 units per SKU; custom formulation with custom packaging typically starts at 500 to 1,000 units because of component minimums.

Do I need halal certification to sell skincare in Malaysia?

No. Halal certification is voluntary for cosmetics sold in Malaysia; the mandatory step is cosmetic notification with the NPRA. It becomes a practical requirement for modern-trade retail, cooperative and government-linked channels, and for export to Indonesia and the Gulf.

Can I add halal certification later?

Only if production is on a certified line. Certification covers the premises, process and ingredients rather than the brand, so moving to it usually means changing factory, re-running stability testing and updating the notification.
